COVID-19 Pandemic Preparedness & Response Plan for Reopening Newington Arena – Newington, CT – Phase 1

The 77,000 sq. ft. Newington Arena has developed the following COVID-19 Pandemic Preparedness & Response Plan for Reopening based on best practices and procedures outlined by various respected sources, and in alignment with provisions set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

To ensure the safety of customers, the following protocols have been put in place.

Housekeeping – Cleaning/Disinfecting

  • Common/High-Traffic Areas - Increase cleaning intervals to ensure a safe environment. Athletes in active areas (ice surfaces) will be limited to one participant per 1000 sq. ft. Athletes in static areas (locker room) will be limited to 6 foot social distancing. Congregating in common areas will not be allowed.
  • "High-Touch" Objects - Disinfect doors, handles, light switches, keyboards, telephones, handrails, Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, vending machines, faucets and restroom dispensers 3 to 4 times daily.
  • Offices/Desks - Encourage workers to self-clean and disinfect at the conclusion of each shift.
  • Concessions/Snack Area and Party/Meeting Rooms – Arena Grill and Meeting rooms will be closed until further notice.
  • Player Benches/Penalty Boxes/Scoreboard Controllers - Disinfect hourly or between user groups/use.
  • Operations -  All operational controls, equipment and tools will be disinfected following each shift and between use, if feasible, if these items are manned and/or used by more than one worker.
  • Floors and walls -      Mop floor surfaces 3-4 times daily and disinfect frequently touched wall surfaces.
  • Locker rooms – Customers will be assigned to specific rooms upon entry. All 8 rooms have been marked to maintain 6 ft distancing and will be disinfected prior to and after each groups’ use. All locker room doors will be propped open.
  • Ice Surfaces – Newington Arena surfaces are 17,000 sq. ft. We conduct maintenance and cleaning hourly or between group use. There will be no contact allowed between participants. Spitting on the ice will be strictly prohibited

Staff has been instructed to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water frequently throughout the day, especially at the beginning of their shift, prior to meals and after using the restroom. Alcohol-based (60 to 70 percent) hand sanitizer "stations" have been placed throughout the facility and in the lobby office.

Respiratory Etiquette

Workers and patrons will be instructed to cover their mouths and noses with their sleeves/elbows or tissues whencoughing or sneezing and to avoid touching their faces. For any employees having close contact with customers, masks will be required.

Social Distancing

Social distancing is an effective method of lessening the spread of infection by simply limiting close contact amongindividuals. Where lines form, we have labeled the floor for social distancing.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Face masks will be required for workers responsible for cleaning and/or disinfecting and for those with any close exposure to the public.
  • Gloves will be required for those performing cleaning tasks, and hands should be washed following their use.

General Measures

  • Booking and payments will be done remotely thereby eliminating contact with office staff.
  • Points of entry and exit will be designated to assure strict monitoring of access and sanitization on an hourly basis
  • Newington Arena’s 77,000 sq. ft. building will have air exchange units running through all hours of operation providing fresh air.
  • Ice times will be booked with spacing to prevent engagement between customers entering and exiting.
  • Hockey games and league play will not be permitted at this time
  • Food service will not serve nor be accessible.
  • Signage will be strategically placed throughout the building to ensure adherence to proper socialdistancing, PPE use and infection prevention.
  • Face masks will be required for our customers in the common areas of the building. Face masks are not required on the ice.

Measures for Patrons

  • Will be allowed entry to the building 30 minutes prior to their ice rental time and will be required to exit 20 minutes after their rental.
  • Will be encouraged to arrive dressed to access the ice and to minimize the use of the locker rooms.
  • Limit close coach and player contact.
  • Avoid utilizing benches.
  • Limited number of spectators will be allowed in the building

Figure Skating:

  • Will be allowed entry to the building 20 minutes prior to their ice rental time and will be required to exit 20 minutes after their rental.
  • Shorten programs and stagger ice times to create a buffer between sessions.

  • Coaches should remain in a small area and should not skate alongside any student.
  • Limit coach/skater contact; coaches should not help students up unless the student is unable to get up. Coaches should use verbal cues when instructing students rather than physical contact.

  • Display of new customer-centric signage in our facility (handwashing, social distancing, etc.)
  • Staff will be trained to give friendly reminders to customers regarding polices, especially when they are found tobe in violation of safety precautions.
